A vitamin B1 variant may prevent inflammation in a portion of the eye that leads to the most cases of blindness both in the U.S. and abroad.

When researchers fed lab animals benfotiamene, a fat-soluble version of the vitamin, the inflammatory disorder failed to appear although they had been exposed to the toxin that causes it.

"Benfotiamene strongly suppresses this eye-damaging condition and the biochemical markers we associate with it," said lead author Kota V. Ramana. "We’re optimistic that this simple supplementation with vitamin B1 has great potential as a new therapy for this widespread eye disease."

Clinical trials on the vitamin have revealed few side effects, the study authors noted, and it is absorbed by the body more readily than thiamin, the vitamin variant used as a common diet supplement.

The inflammation, according to the study, is the cause of one out of every 10 cases of blindness reported in the U.S., and swells tissue within the eyeball.

According to the National Eye Institute, more than 20 million Americans over the age of 40 are at risk for blindness because of certain diseases, and about 3.3 million have some form of vision impairment.
