Study finds women's attitudes towards food may increase their chance of being overweightLike many things, gaining – and losing – weight may be a matter of mind over matter, according to the findings of a recent study.

"The basic attitude that people have about food is related to the likelihood that they’re at risk for obesity and weight gain," said study co-author Dennis Degeneffe.

Researchers placed 200 middle-aged women in groups based on their attitudes about food. They also had their body fat, waist size and body mass index measurements taken.

The study found that those who were concerned about nutrition and focused on food for their families scored lowest on the weight measurements. "Impulsive eaters" and "guilt-ridden dieters" scored the highest, and "busy cooking avoiders" were in the middle.

While researchers say the women’s attitudes towards food affected their likelihood of being overweight, it also affects their ability to lose weight, especially among those who were focused on their families or were too busy to put time and effort into food choices.

"Health and nutrition may be important to them, but convenience often wins," said dietician Lona Sandon. "It is very challenging to come up with solutions to help these women lose weight if they are not willing or able to give up something else in their life."ADNFCR-2035-ID-19499925-ADNFCR
