Dairy may promote better bones than calcium-fortified productsThe link between dairy products that include calcium and a reduced likelihood for brittle bones has been documented in a wide body of research.

But a new study from Purdue University says that where calcium comes from in one’s daily intake can play a role in how well it impacts bone growth and maintenance.

In a 10-week study of 200 laboratory animals, researchers fed half the group dairy products and the other half received calcium carbonate, a compound used to fortify foods with calcium that don’t possess the mineral naturally.

Although the levels were meant to mimic adolescents who often consume fewer dairy products, noted the study, those who were consuming dairy had increased measures of bone strength, length, weight and density.

"It’s not due to increased calcium absorption," said lead author Connie Weaver. "It’s more about protecting against bones losing calcium, according to our results of calcium metabolism. Bones are in constant turnover, especially when they are growing.

Data from the study points to dairy consumption as more significant in protecting against bone loss when consumed earlier in life, the scientists said.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19145822-ADNFCR
